Professional gymnastics is an exhilarating sport to watch, from soaring triple backflips to jaw-dropping swings on the uneven bars. We agree that landing a perfect front flip on a 4-inch beam seems impossible. Gymnasts, on the other hand, can perform the impossible with grace and poise.
So, how do they pull it off? Genetics and muscle composition are undoubtedly essential factors, and athletic training is also essential for success — but it is not only physical training that transforms dedicated gymnasts into champions. Gymnasts inadvertently train the mission control centre of strength and technique: the brain's motor system, by repeatedly practising moves like back handsprings and switch leaps on the balance beam.
